MOTHER’S DAY

(Textbook Questions)

Reading With Insight

Answer: Main issue raised in the play is status of mother in the house.

She is working in the house all days of year throughout her life.

She does not have any holiday or eight hour working schedule.

She does not get any opportunity for entertainment.

Other family members take her for granted. Many times their behaviour is disrespectful to her.

Answer: In my opinion the play is not merely a caricature. The problems raised prevail in almost every house of the world. These are genuine problems of a mother.

The emphasis in play is about mothers standing up for their own rights. They need to themselves understand what  they deserve. Once such clarity comes, every family member starts supporting the lady of the house.

The problems have been resolved through a dramatic sequence. Though finally Mrs. Pearson demands better attention for herself and she gets it. Thus the result obtained is good.

Answer: It is really sad that issues prevailing at the time of writing the play continue to be more or less similar.

The lady of the house even today has to toil harder than other member of family – every day without any holiday. She does not get any help in daily chores of house from others. She is supposed to be a cook, a cleaner and a care taker.

While other members move out for enjoyment, she stays at home to take care of routine works.

Even if she does a job or business, other members do not support her in works of house. She would need to cook and serve the food.

Thus situation has not changed much.

Answer: Drama is one of the ways of writing prose. Drama is written around a particular concept or event. It could be a social evil, family situation, a national problem or an international issue. Characters of the drama talk as if people are communicating with each other in real life. The stage setting makes drama more aligned to real life.

Several drama companies have been formed across the world. Some companies tour the world. There are theatres in major cities where drama are regularly staged.

Advertisement involving various characters shown through television is also drama. Film is also a picturisation of drama. Each one of us know about popularity of advertisements and films.

Thus message conveyed through drama is quite effective.
