Short Answer Questions (30-40 words)
He had come to the house of Gerrard to assume his identity. The intruder wanted to kill Gerrard and live peacefully in his house.
So the intruder thought of killing Gerrard to assume his identity.
When Gerrard tried to avoid answering questions, the intruder asked him to stop acting smart.
The intruder had killed a policemen. Even if he killed Gerrard and got caught, his punishment would be same. So to frighten Gerrard, the intruder made this statement.
He wanted to impress upon the intruder that he does not have a decent background. Actually Gerrard wanted to distract attention of intruder.
So he called himself ‘a poor hunted rat’.
Baker, milkman and greengrocer sometimes used to come to his house.
An intruder getting into the house of Gerrard and threatening to kill him was the problem faced by Gerrard. . Owing to his calm behaviour and quick planning, Gerrard managed to lock the intruder into the cupboard. Gerrard finds this quite funny.
Hence Gerrard uttered those words.
Long Answer questions (100-120 words)
Gerrard narrates that he himself is not a simple person. He advises the intruder to think why he does not see many people. Why his timings to go from the house and return are irregular. Also why he does not meet many people.
Gerrard explains that once he had got into trouble with someone. He had shot that person. Thus he explains that he himself is a criminal.
This aspect of life of Gerrard was not known to the intruder. Hence Gerrard terms this as a big surprise. Though Gerrard had cooked this story to save his own life.
Gerrard informed him that he himself was a criminal. He had once murdered a person. Hence he had been living alone in his cottage. He did not see many people.
He further told that he has posted a person at the main road. If anybody was coming to arrest him, that person would call him. He had packed disguise cloths and false moustache in the bag.
At that time the telephone bell rang. He asked the intruder to come with him to the garage. When the intruder tried to look out of the door, Gerrard pushed him into the cupboard and locked it.
Gerrard cooked a story that he himself was a criminal. He had once murdered a person. To dodge police, he has been living alone in the cottage.
He further narrated that he has posted a person on the main road. That person would call him if police comes to arrest him.
The intruder still did not believe him completely. Gerrard narrated that he had kept the bag ready with disguise clothes and false moustaches to hide his identity while on the run. Now the intruder believed him and fell into the trap of Gerrard.
Thus bag played an important part in the planning of Gerrard.
