Long Answer Questions – 120-150 words

Answer: In the story, the peddler used to earn his living by selling wire rattraps. He used to beg or steal material for making these. Even then it was difficult for him to make his two ends meet. So he had to indulge in small thieveries also. He is touched by the kindness and compassion shown towards him by Edla. This completely changed him and he became a better person.

The young generation of this era is also yearning for kindness, company and compassion. Owing to fast life, attack of social media, and decline in family value they are feeling alone. They do not get guidance and moral education. Hence they become an easy prey and indulge in petty crimes.

Society and parents should show some sympathy to them. They should listen to them. They should talk to them often and cultivate good family values.

By doing so the grim situation can certainly be reversed. We would have a better society to live in.

Answer: The peddler used to earn his living by selling wire rattraps. He used to beg or steal material for making these. Even then it was difficult for him to make his two ends meet. So he had to indulge in small thieveries also. He betrayed the old crofter who had provided him shelter.

The ironmaster mistook him as his old colleague. Edla persuades him to come and stay with their house.

Next morning the true identity of the peddler got revealed. The ironmaster wanted to throw him out of house. But Edla prevents her father. She gives good food to the peddler. He was touched by the kindness of the young girl. The peddler changes himself for the good.

While leaving the house, the peddler signs himself as Captain von Stahle in the letter. This indicates that his view to the world had changed.

Thus the story vividly brings about the power of sympathy, goodness and kindness to change people.

Answer: The peddler used to earn his living by selling wire rattraps. He used to beg or steal material for making these. He indulged in small thieveries also. He betrayed the old crofter who had provided him shelter. Thus he was not averse to doing hard work. However to keep him alive he was forced to steal.

He was imaginative. He imagined the whole world as a rattrap. This became his favourite pass time and a source of amusement.

He had a ‘never say die’ attitude. He was lost in the forest. He recognized the opportunity offered by the sound of thumping. And he found his way out.

He had a big heart. He had emotions. The kindness and sympathy extended by Edla had touched him deeply. He left a gift for her. He also left thirty kronor with a request to return to the crofter. He signed the letter as Captain von Stahle.

We can thus conclude that the peddler was a hard working person having a fertile mind. He had emotions and the courage to change for the better.

Answer: The peddler believed that most human beings are pursuing worldly pleasures. These serve as bait to them. Once they touch it, they get trapped into it. In fact this thought had become his usual amusement.

Once he stole money from an old crofter. Now he did not want to walk along the road though earlier he used to. He got a fear of being caught. He went through a forest. But he could not find his way out. Then he started thinking that he was caught in the rattrap. He got into the rattrap because he aspired to possess more money.

Somehow he got out of the forest and reached an Ironmill. He wanted to sleep there for the night. But again he got trapped because he accepted the invitation to be at the manor house for Christmas Eve. His true identity was found out.

Due to kindness and hospitality of Edla, he finally changed for the good. He called himself a rat in his letter.

Answer: The peddler believed that most human beings are pursuing worldly pleasures. These serve as bait to them. Once they touch it, they get trapped into it.

The crofter had welcomed the peddler to stay with him. He seemed to be satisfied with his life style. He says that his bossy has been supporting her well.

The ironmaster owns an Iron mill. He wants to make good quality of iron. He seems to enjoy his work. He seems to be a contended person. He is not complaining about his life.

Edla is living with her father. She had persuaded the peddler to come to their house. She is a kind and compassionate lady.

Thus we can see that none of other characters show any sign of being trapped. Each of them seems to be satisfied with their life style. It is only the peddler who thinks of the world as a rattrap.

Answer: One dark evening the peddler reached a cottage where an old person lived alone. He happily offered a shelter to the peddler. The crofter gave food to the peddler. He took out a big chunk of tobacco for himself and the guest.

Crofter talked about earlier days he worked as a crofter in an Iron Mill. Now he sells milk of his cow to a nearby creamery. He had received thirty kronor from the creamery as his due payment. He showed the bills to the peddler. They played cards till their bedtime.

Next early morning the crofter went to milk his cow. The peddler went on his way. But he returned within half an hour to steal the money. After stealing, the peddler went away.

The episode teaches us that it is very difficult to live alone in this world. Every human being needs company.

It is not good to believe strangers and share our secrets with them.

Dire necessity of life can lure anyone to temptations. One tends to neglect the good deeds done by other humans under such situations.

Answer: When ironmaster was on his routine night inspection of the factory, he mistook the stranger as his old colleague. He felt very sad to see him in such a poor condition. He told him that he should not have resigned from the regiment. He also told the peddler that had he been serving at that time, he would have never allowed the stranger to resign. The heart of iron master was filled with sympathy. He wanted to help him. So he requested the stranger to come to his house. Since the stranger declined, he sent her daughter to persuade the stranger. When his daughter expressed doubts about authenticity of the peddler, the iron master brushed these aside.

But his behaviour took an opposite turn when he realized his mistake. He accused the stranger of deceiving him and not being truthful. He wanted to hand over the peddler to Sheriff.

Earlier behaviour of ironmaster was sympathetic but later it was very aggressive.

Answer: Edla had a good power of persuasion and ability to convince. She could convince the peddler to come to their house.

She had good judgement. She guessed at the forge itself that the stranger had either stolen something or had escaped from jail. At home she expressed her doubt about the stranger being an educated person. Her both doubts later proved correct.

She believed in honouring her commitments. When her father asked the stranger to move out of the house she interceded to honour her commitment.

Edla was an epitome of kindness, compassion and sympathy. She gifted  her father’s suit to the peedler and invited him for next year Christmas.

She was an emotional person. She was dejected to learn reality of peddler. Later she was happy to note that peddler had changed for the good.

So Edla had several attributes of a good human being and high moral values.
