Answer: She sees that her mother is old and pale. She was looking ashen like a corpse. She starts feeling the pain of separation. This pain is similar to her feelings of childhood when her mother moved away from her.
Answer: The poet is driving to the airport. Trees at the distance appear to be moving in opposite direction. Her mother has become old. She is not able to make much movement. Reference of trees has been made to bring about the contrast.
The first contrast is about the ability to move.
The second contrast is about the direction of movement. Movement of old mother and trees is in opposite direction.
Answer: This term has been used to bring out the contrast between children and her mother.
Merry children coming out of their homes represent happiness, youth and flow of life. While the mother is old and weak. She represents melancholy and inactivity.
Answer: The moon during winter does not shine bright. It looks hazy and of dull pale colour.
Because of aging and weakness, colour of mother has become pale. The face does not have the shine.
The comparison has been made to bring about similarity.
Answer: The poet wants to give comfort and assurance to her mother that she will return soon to meet her again.
The mother and the poet both appear to be sad because of the separation.
In order to hide her feelings poet smiles. The smile also provides some comfort to her mother.
