Summary
Main reasons for pollution of Ganges River are open sewage system, no treatment of sewage, soil erosion and dumping of plastic garbage. Industrial waste particularly from leather industry is another cause. Industrial growth will increase the pollution. Because of religious faith carcasses are thrown into river. People routinely take bath and it increases during various pilgrimage months. Extent of pollution is more than 2800 time WHO standards. Bacteria level is more than 3000 times WHO standards. Government has taken cleaning exercise. World Bank has given a loan of $ 1 billion for this work. This loan will certainly be helpful.
